What is Oral Cancer Reconstruction?
Oral cancer reconstruction refers to a series of surgical and rehabilitative procedures aimed at restoring the appearance, function, and structure of the mouth, jaw, and surrounding tissues after the removal of cancerous growths.
What causes it:
- Cancer Surgery: Removal of tumors from the mouth, tongue, jaw, or throat often leaves functional and aesthetic defects.
- Radiation Therapy Damage: Can lead to tissue shrinkage, scarring, or bone damage requiring surgical correction.
- Congenital or Genetic Risk Factors: People with inherited conditions may be predisposed to oral cancers requiring complex reconstruction.
- Delayed Diagnosis: Advanced-stage cancers may require more extensive surgical excision, leading to greater reconstruction needs.
Symptoms:
- Difficulty speaking, chewing, or swallowing after tumor removal
- Facial asymmetry or visible tissue/bone defects
- Loss of jawbone, part of the tongue, or palate
- Impaired oral function affecting nutrition and quality of life
- Pain or tightness from scar tissue or soft tissue contracture
Complete Process
Collaborative Cancer Planning
We work closely with oncologists, ENT surgeons, and maxillofacial teams to plan reconstruction alongside tumor removal. This ensures minimal delay in recovery and better cosmetic and functional results.
Defect Assessment & Flap Selection
Post-tumor removal, we assess the type, size, and location of the defect. Reconstruction may involve. Free flap transfers (e.g., Radial Forearm, Fibula, ALT flap)
Microsurgical Reconstruction
Using microsurgery, we transfer healthy tissue (skin, muscle, bone, or a combination) from another part of the body to restore oral and facial form and function. Blood vessels are carefully connected under a microscope for survival of the tissue.
Recovery & Rehabilitation
Post-surgery, the patient receives nutritional, speech, and physical therapy support. Our goal is to help restore clear speech, effective swallowing, facial movement, and a confident smile.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Oral cancer reconstruction is a set of surgical procedures aimed at restoring the form and function of the mouth, jaw, tongue, and surrounding tissues after tumor removal. It helps patients regain the ability to eat, speak, and restore facial aesthetics.
Patients who have undergone surgical treatment for oral or oropharyngeal cancers—especially those involving the jawbone, tongue, cheek, or palate—may require reconstruction to correct defects and restore normal function and appearance.
Depending on the location and extent of the defect, techniques may include:
- Local or regional tissue flaps
- Free flap reconstruction (microvascular surgery)
- Bone grafts or implants
- Skin or muscle grafts
- Prosthetic rehabilitation (dental or maxillofacial)
In many cases, patients regain most or all of their ability to speak, chew, and swallow. However, the level of recovery depends on the extent of the cancer, type of reconstruction, and rehabilitation support such as speech or swallowing therapy.
Initial recovery from surgery may take 2–4 weeks, while full functional recovery and rehabilitation can take several months. Ongoing follow-ups and therapy play a crucial role in long-term improvement.
While some changes may occur, reconstructive surgeons aim to minimize scarring and restore natural facial symmetry. In many cases, advanced techniques result in very subtle or hidden scars.
