What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty, also known as ear reshaping surgery, is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to correct the shape, size, position, or protrusion of the ears. It’s commonly done to set prominent ears closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. The procedure is suitable for both children (usually after age 5) and adults.
What causes it:
- Genetics: Most cases are congenital (present from birth)
- Underdeveloped ear folds (antihelical fold)
- Overdeveloped ear cartilage (conchal cartilage)
- Ear injury or trauma leading to deformity
- Previous unsuccessful ear surgeries (revision otoplasty)

Preoperative Preparation

Surgical Procedure
The surgery typically takes 1 to 2 hours. It involves making small incisions behind the ears to remove or reshape cartilage and bring the ears closer to the head. The incisions are closed with fine sutures and are usually well hidden.
Postoperative Recovery
Post-surgery, your ears will be bandaged to support the new shape. Mild pain, swelling, or itching may occur but is manageable with medication. You’ll need to avoid sleeping on your sides and follow your surgeon’s care instructions. Most people return to normal activities in 5–7 days.
