What is VPI correction?
VPI is when the soft palate doesn’t close properly during speech, causing nasal-sounding speech. It’s common in people with cleft palate or nerve-related issues.
What causes it:
- Congenital conditions: Most commonly associated with cleft palate
- Neuromuscular disorders: Conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
- Surgical causes: Following adenoidectomy or tumor removal
- Trauma or injury: Affecting the palate or pharyngeal muscles
Symptoms:
- Nasal-sounding (hypernasal) speech
- Air leakage through the nose while speaking
- Weak or unclear consonant sounds
- Nasal regurgitation of food or liquids
Complete Process
Detailed Speech Assessment
We work closely with speech-language pathologists to conduct , Nasopharyngoscopy (scope exam) , Video fluoroscopy , Speech evaluation to measure resonance and airflow patterns
Customized Treatment Plan
Depending on the cause and severity, treatment options include , Speech therapy (for mild or functional VPI) , Surgical correction (for structural VPI) , Palatal lift prosthesis (for neurologically based VPI)
Surgical Correction
Common surgical procedures include , Pharyngeal flap surgery – Creating a flap from the throat wall to aid closure , Sphincter pharyngoplasty – Repositioning muscles to narrow the velopharyngeal opening , Palatal lengthening – To allow better reach of the soft palate.
Post-Surgery Speech Therapy
After surgery, patients undergo ongoing speech therapy to retrain articulation and improve clarity. Follow-up includes endoscopic exams to assess closure and healing.
